Hold on to Your Schnitzel, Lidl to Land in Tuscan Lakes

European pantry purveyor Lidl has put Tuscan Lakes on its shopping list with plans to open one of the company’s high quality, low price grocery stores here next year.

Lidl (pronounced like needle) recently purchased 5 acres at the southwest corner of Tuscan Lakes and League City Parkway for a 35,000-square-foot market. The grocer, which operates 10,000 stores worldwide, intends to offer an assortment of familiar and private-label goods.

Often described as a cross between Trader Joe’s and Wal-Mart, the chain offers deep discounts on groceries, household items and even clothes. In the United States, Lidl will concentrate on offering locally sourced vegetables, fresh and frozen fish, gluten-free and organic items, high-quality meats, a curated wine selection and fresh-baked European-style breads.

The first nine Lidl U.S. stores will open on the East Coast this summer with more than 100 stores planned to open in the U.S. within the next year or so.
