LEAGUE CITY, Texas — City leaders will present plans Wednesday that will outline a new vision for Galveston County’s largest city.
League City staff members and elected officials will present plans at the city’s "New Directions" open house detailing economic development, historic district upgrades, improving mobility and developing attractive neighborhoods, destinations and a cohesive and marketable identity.
The city’s population has nearly doubled during the past decade, and more than half of the city remains undeveloped.
In preparation for future growth, City Manager Marcus Jahns asked staff members to develop ways to guide League City in a more aggressive direction that reflects where the community wants to go, said Tony Allender, League City’s planning and research director.
To improve League City’s image and quality of life, community efforts will focus on developing destinations, particularly improving the historic district along Main Street.
The city received a $125,000 grant through the Houston-Galveston Area Council to fund a study that would propose a variety of activities and sustain multiple forms of transportation in the historic district.
A consulting firm will draft plans for a public market, signage, street improvements, an amphitheater and more parking.
Officials spent a year and a half gathering information from residents and studying the best practices of other communities.
A visual preference survey sought resident input on how League City should grow.
Rather than more strip malls and big box retailers, response showed residents have an affinity for walkable destinations, Allender said.
The city also had a series of meetings with residents where people told leaders what issues they wanted to see addressed.
"I’ve never had the opportunity to dig as deep as we have here, to truly understand what the in-depth needs are and make solutions this tightly crafted together. This is really a complete departure from what League City has done in the past, but also what most communities have done in looking at themselves."
